A Tribute to Spurr

Spurr was my first agility dog. We started agility classes in 1995 at the Dog Training Club of Tampa. Our first trial was in the fall of 1995. It took us a few trials to figure it all out, but I will never forget our first clean run on December 30, 1995. I have a very cool trophy that we won because we were High in Trial Novice A that day. We even had a repeat performance the following day to earn another trophy!

Many people know my dogs that I run in agility now, but not nearly as many know about the "behind the scenes" dogs. Spurr was one of my "behind the scenes" dogs. I really feel like Spurr was solely responsible for making me the agility handler that I am today. She truly taught me the value of teamwork, and that this is a GAME that we play! Spurr taught me that it is most important to have fun with agility.

Spurr was my companion for the many years of ups and downs, and she was always there for me to cry with or laugh with. She was certified as a therapy dog and during her many years of visits to local nursing homes she was able to share her gift with other people too. She was always willing to give a kiss when asked!

During the last 6 months as she became more immobile due to her age, she still followed me around from room to room, and was always next to me. Never more than an arms reach away....

Spurr, I miss you so much, and you will always be in my heart. Thanks for almost 15 years of love and kisses. You will always be my girl.

Spurr is a blue merle and she was born in August 1994. Spurr is a certified therapy dog and we visit a local nursing home on a weekly basis. Spurr is retired from agility, and she loves her new job visiting people.

Thanks to Bonnie McDonald for this wonderful portrait shot of Spurr.

This picture was taken in December 1995. Our first High in Trial from the Novice A class.

This was April 1997, the day Spurr finished her MX, which was the highest agility title that AKC had at that time.

Spurr also finished her MAD, which is Master Agility Dog from the United States Dog Agility Association. Spurr got the Master's Gambler leg she needed for her MAD in February 2000.
