We first met in Australia in July 2002 while teaching at the International School of Perth. We began dating within a few weeks and had great adventures exploring the outback and the ocean together. After a year of boarding school life, we moved back to the Washington D.C. area where Sadie attends Georgetown School of Medicine and John is a teacher at Glasgow Middle School and a basketball coach at Jeb Stuart High School. We bought an apartment last year and live in Arlington, VA with our wonderful dog, Zen, and our energetic cat, Flash.
When we got engaged: Saturday April 23, 2005 in the Bahamas How it happened: John took me on a surprise trip. He told me we were going somewhere for three days but would say no more. At the airport, John did all the checking in while I kept my eyes closed and my hands over my ears. After a short flight, we arrived in Nassau, Bahamas and headed straight for the boat to go scuba diving. After about five minutes underwater, John pulled me over to the reef and we rested in the sand. He pulled a slate board out of his BCD pocket on which he had previously written, “There are a lot of fish in this sea, but you are the one for me.” While I was reading the board, John had pulled a ring out and was down on his knees. I was so surprised and so happy! I immediately wrote “Yes!!” on the slate board and we removed our regulators to seal it with a kiss. After celebrating briefly on the surface, we finished our dive and headed back to the island for a great engagement weekend. We went shark diving (it was so much fun!) and enjoyed the wonderful Bahamian food, beer, and beaches. It was a fabulous surprise weekend and an amazing proposal!
